No Sugar Shortage in Punjab, Adequate Stocks Available: CM Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday said there was no shortage of sugar in the state and directed officials to maintain close surveillance over its stock, sale and supply to protect consumers from hoarding and artificial scarcity.

Chairing a meeting with senior officers, Mann said Punjab had adequate sugar stocks despite a decline in sugarcane production during 2025-26 due to adverse weather conditions.

“Punjab already has sufficient stock of sugar and the officers must ensure that adequate stocks are maintained at all times,” the Chief Minister said, stressing that sugar was an essential household commodity and its availability could not be compromised.

He directed officials to take firm action against attempts to create artificial scarcity or hoard sugar. He also asked them to take effective measures to dispel any panic or misconceptions among consumers regarding the availability of the commodity.

Mann instructed officials to physically verify sugar stocks maintained by sugar mills and strictly enforce the prescribed stock-holding limit. He also directed that stocks be registered and reported weekly on the Food Stock Monitoring Portal.

The Chief Minister further ordered strict implementation of stock-holding limits applicable to bulk sugar consumers.

“The Punjab Government would continue to maintain a close watch on the sale, stock and supply of sugar in the larger public interest,” he said.

Mann said the government would take all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted sugar supplies in Punjab and safeguard consumer interests.

The Chief Minister noted that sugarcane production had declined across the country, including Punjab, during 2025-26 because of inclement weather. However, he reiterated that the state currently had sufficient sugar stocks and there was no alarming situation.

Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr Ravi Bhagat, Secretary Cooperation Ajit Balaji Joshi and other senior officers attended the meeting.
