A student protest in Patna over demands related to the BPSC TRE-4 recruitment examination turned violent on Tuesday, prompting police to use water cannons and resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the demonstrators. Several protesters were detained and Town DSP Kamakhya Narayan Singh was injured in stone-pelting, officials said.
The students were demanding, among other things, that the BPSC TRE-4 examination be conducted in a single stage, that negative marking be scrapped and that greater transparency be ensured in the recruitment process.
The administration had deployed extensive security arrangements between Gandhi Maidan and Dakbungalow Crossing to prevent the protesters from entering sensitive government areas. Barricades were erected at the JP Roundabout near Gandhi Maidan, but a large group of students reportedly broke through and reached Dakbungalow Crossing.
Police initially tried to persuade the protesters to leave the area as their numbers increased. The students refused to withdraw and continued raising slogans over their demands.
Water cannons were subsequently deployed, but the protesters remained at the spot. Some continued raising slogans and waving the Tricolour despite the water being sprayed. In an unusual moment, one protester was seen applying shampoo while standing under the water cannon before approaching police personnel with shampoo still on his head.
The situation later escalated into clashes between protesters and police. A lathi-charge was carried out as police attempted to clear the area. Protesters allegedly responded by pelting stones, injuring Town DSP Kamakhya Narayan Singh.
A female student also suffered a head injury and was taken to Gardiner Road Hospital for treatment. Several protesters were detained and initially taken to Secretariat police station before being shifted to Airport police station.
A female police officer fainted amid the intense heat at Dakbungalow Crossing.
District Magistrate Kundan Kumar, SSP Kartikeya Sharma and Zonal IG Jitendra Rana were among the senior officials who reached the spot to monitor the situation.
The protesters remained at Dakbungalow Crossing for nearly two hours despite repeated efforts by police to clear the area.
Apart from the BPSC TRE-4 demands, the students raised other issues concerning pending government recruitment examinations.
Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the government had already accepted “almost all” of the students’ demands. He added that the government remained open to dialogue if the students had any further concerns to raise.
