Singer Sonu Nigam wants to expand his musical repertoire by exploring international languages, saying he would like to sing in Chinese, Japanese and Spanish in the future.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Nigam said experimenting with unfamiliar languages would allow him to learn new musical styles and experiences. He noted that he has already performed songs in Latin, English and Dutch.
“I have sung in Latin, English, and on stage I have sung in Dutch. I would like to attempt some international languages, like Chinese and Japanese, probably. It will be fun. I will get a chance to learn something new, maybe Spanish. Let’s see,” he said.
Nigam’s experience with different languages dates back to the beginning of his professional career. Before moving to Mumbai, he was based in Delhi, where he worked extensively on advertising jingles and would record around 16-17 jingles a day in different voices.
He said this early work exposed him to several Indian languages and helped him become comfortable singing in diverse linguistic styles.
Over the course of his career, Nigam has sung in Odia, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Marathi, Haryanavi, Khasi, Manipuri, Konkani, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Kashmiri and Dogri, among others.
The singer said his long career has given him numerous opportunities to explore new languages and styles. He also noted that while he had earlier sung in Haryanavi for films, he is now working on private projects in the language.
