A CBI Court in Lucknow has sentenced former State Bank of India (SBI) branch manager Ajay Kumar Gaur to four years in prison and imposed a fine of ₹90,000 after convicting him in a bribery case linked to the sanction of a personal loan.
Gaur was serving as the Branch Manager of SBI’s Shahupuri Branch in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district when the case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26, 2018.
According to the CBI, the case followed a complaint alleging that Gaur had demanded ₹50,000 from the complainant for sanctioning and disbursing a ₹10 lakh personal loan. The alleged bribe represented five per cent of the loan amount.
The CBI subsequently laid a trap and caught Gaur red-handed while he was allegedly demanding and accepting ₹40,000 from the complainant as illegal gratification.
After completing its investigation, the agency filed a chargesheet against Gaur on April 27, 2018. Charges were framed by the court on January 9, 2019.
Following the trial, the Lucknow CBI Court found Gaur guilty and sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment besides imposing the ₹90,000 fine.
In a separate development, the CBI had on August 21 arrested proclaimed offender Roop Singh, who had allegedly been absconding for nearly 23 years in a case involving the alleged criminal misappropriation of goods worth ₹9 lakh being transported to customers.
According to the agency, Singh was arrested following sustained efforts by the investigating team. His alleged co-accused Arjun Singh was arrested on November 7, 2025, after remaining absconding for nearly 22 years.
The case originated from Case No. 178/1998, registered at Amalner Police Station in Maharashtra on October 4, 1998, concerning the alleged theft and misappropriation of goods, including ghee and moong, loaded onto two trucks.
The CBI said the goods were allegedly stolen and misappropriated on September 27, 1998, by two truck drivers, Babu Khan and Aslam Khan.
