The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday permitted two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress to separately observe the foundation day of the party’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), on August 28, but barred both from holding their events at the traditional venue of Mayo Road.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya’s single-judge Bench was hearing pleas filed by both factions seeking permission to organise their respective programmes at Mayo Road in central Kolkata, where TMCP had traditionally held its foundation day celebrations.
The court instead allotted separate venues to the two groups. The faction led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, was permitted to hold its programme at Cathedral Road in central Kolkata.
The rival faction led by expelled Trinamool legislator and current Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, was allowed to organise its event at Rani Rashmoni Road, also in central Kolkata and away from Cathedral Road.
The court imposed several conditions on both programmes to prevent crowding and maintain public order.
Neither faction can have more than 1,500 participants at its event. Both programmes have been scheduled between 12 noon and 3 p.m.
The court also directed the Kolkata Police to make adequate security arrangements for the two events. Each faction has been asked to submit the names of 15 volunteers to the Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police by 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
The court further ordered that the gatherings remain confined to one lane at each designated venue, while the second lane must remain open for vehicular traffic.
TMCP has traditionally organised its foundation day programme at Mayo Road. The venue had hosted the event without such factional disputes when Mamata Banerjee was Chief Minister.
The latest arrangements come after the Trinamool Congress lost power in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, following which the party founded by Mamata Banerjee split into two factions, according to the source material.
