A complaint has been lodged against Bengali actor and former Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty for allegedly assaulting a carpenter who had gone to his residence in south Kolkata seeking payment for construction work, police said on Tuesday.
The complainant, Rajkapur Sharma, approached Behala police station on Monday and alleged that he was abused, threatened and assaulted at the actor’s residence. He also named Soham’s bodyguard Totan Sardar in the complaint.
According to Sharma, he was contracted on May 12 to make a cupboard at Soham’s residence in the Behala area for ₹55,000, against which he received an advance of ₹30,000. After completing around 80 per cent of the work, he was allegedly asked to make two additional cupboards.
Sharma said the additional work was around 50 per cent complete when he stopped receiving payments. He alleged that he went to the residence to seek his outstanding dues after being called there by a security guard on Sunday.
In his complaint, Sharma said he was kept waiting for a considerable period and was initially told that his payment would be made. When he asked for the outstanding amount, he alleged that he was abused and assaulted, his mobile phone was taken away and he was eventually pushed out of the house.
The complainant has alleged that Soham and his bodyguard threatened him with death and snatched his phone.
Police said an inquiry has been initiated based on the written complaint. Soham Chakraborty has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
The actor has faced allegations in other cases as well. Last July, he was accused of cheating a businessman of ₹68 lakh, issuing death threats and criminal breach of trust.
The complaint in that case was filed at Charu Market police station in Tollygunge by Sheikh Shahid Imam, a resident of Arambagh in Hooghly district and head of Sonam Movies.
Earlier, when Soham was an MLA, allegations had also been made over an altercation involving workers at a city restaurant during a film shoot, including claims of threats and assault.
