Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday approved a salary increase of more than 120 per cent for teachers working in Adarsh Schools, benefiting around 1,100 teachers across the state.
The decision will raise their monthly salary from around ₹10,000 to more than ₹22,000, providing a significant improvement in their financial security and service conditions.
Chairing a meeting with a delegation of Adarsh School teachers, Mann said teachers were the backbone of the education system and deserved dignity, fair compensation and recognition for their contribution to shaping the future of students.
“Teachers are the backbone of our education system. For nearly two decades, these teachers have served with dedication despite receiving a meagre salary. Our government has decided to correct this long-standing injustice by increasing their salaries by more than 120 per cent,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the teachers would also be provided facilities on the pattern of Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, with the aim of improving their service conditions.
More than 15,000 students are currently enrolled in the CBSE-affiliated Adarsh Schools, according to the government. Mann said the state remained committed to safeguarding the interests of both teachers and students.
“When teachers feel secure and respected, students receive better education. Our priority is to safeguard the interests of teachers so that the future of every child studying in these schools remains secure,” he said.
Mann said successive governments had neglected the teaching community despite its important role in the education system. He said his government had addressed the legitimate demands of Adarsh School teachers after years of neglect.
“Our government is committed to the welfare of every section of society. We have accepted the legitimate demands of these teachers and will continue ensuring they can discharge their responsibilities in a smooth and hassle-free manner,” he said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that his government would continue working to protect teachers’ interests and strengthen the education system.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr Ravi Bhagat, Secretary School Education Sonali Giri and other senior officials attended the meeting.
