The Haryana State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (SV&ACB) has arrested a private person red-handed for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹75,000 in exchange for releasing pending payment for a village Panchayat construction work in Karnal district.
The accused has been identified as Rajeev, a resident of Risalwa village in Assandh tehsil of Karnal. The investigation has also allegedly revealed the involvement of Sukhbir, Panchayat Secretary of Risalwa village, who is currently absconding.
According to the complaint, the complainant’s firm had constructed the boundary wall of a general Chaupal in Risalwa village. The total payment due for the work was ₹5,16,800.
Rajeev allegedly demanded ₹75,000 as a 17 per cent commission for getting the payment cheque released. The complainant alleged that the money was sought in the name of the village Sarpanch and Panchayat Secretary Sukhbir.
Following receipt of the complaint, the SV&ACB Karnal team laid a trap. Rajeev was arrested while allegedly accepting the bribe during the operation, which was conducted in the presence of a gazetted officer and a shadow witness.
The agency said ₹50,000 of the alleged bribe amount was recovered from the accused.
An FIR, numbered 21 dated August 24, 2026, has been registered at the SV&ACB police station in Karnal under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The bureau said efforts were underway to arrest Panchayat Secretary Sukhbir, who remains absconding in the case.
The SV&ACB reiterated that no person involved in corruption would be spared and said action against those allegedly demanding bribes under the guise of government-related work would continue.
