The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday elaborated on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Saptadhara’ roadmap for building a ‘Viksit Bharat’, describing it as an ambitious national vision aimed at giving India development aspirations comparable to those associated with the “Great American Dream”.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, party national spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Sambit Patra said the roadmap unveiled by Modi from the Red Fort on August 15 seeks to simultaneously strengthen manufacturing, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, defence, clean energy and India’s cultural influence.
Patra said the first stream of the roadmap focuses on manufacturing power, with an emphasis on strengthening domestic value chains and achieving end-to-end production in India. He said precision manufacturing, zero-defect products and globally competitive factories would be central to this effort.
The second stream centres on farmers, agriculture and food products. Referring to farmers as ‘Annadatas’, Patra said the focus would be on improving agricultural productivity, increasing the production of pulses and oilseeds and promoting chemical-free and organic farming.
Technology and innovation constitute the third stream, covering areas such as space technology, quantum technology, artificial intelligence and data infrastructure. Patra stressed the importance of keeping Indian data secure within the country. He also highlighted Modi’s announcement of training one crore young people in AI within a year and providing free online coaching to children through Digital Public Infrastructure.
The fourth stream, Gati Shakti, seeks to strengthen connectivity through high-speed rail, modern highways and inland waterways. Patra highlighted infrastructure development in the Northeast, including new and upgraded airports and railway stations, and cited the redevelopment of Puri railway station as an example.
Defence power forms the fifth stream. Patra cited surgical strikes and airstrikes as examples of what he described as a changed approach to national security. He also said India was becoming increasingly self-reliant in defence manufacturing and had moved from being a major importer to exporting indigenous defence equipment.
The sixth stream is the Green and Blue Economy, with green hydrogen, renewable energy, energy storage and green manufacturing identified as key areas. Patra cited rooftop solar installations and the Surya Ghar Yojana as examples of clean energy becoming part of everyday life. He also highlighted the target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The seventh stream, cultural and soft power, encompasses Yoga, Ayurveda, cultural tourism, handicrafts, cinema, visual effects, animation, gaming and digital content. Patra pointed to the global popularity of Yoga and International Yoga Day as indicators of India’s growing cultural influence.
Patra also criticised Congress leader P Chidambaram over his reported comments concerning the term ‘Dimagi Naxal’, or intellectual Naxal. Referring to a 2013 affidavit submitted by the then UPA government before the Supreme Court on the Naxalism threat, he argued that what he described as intellectual Naxalism also needed to be countered.
The BJP spokesperson said the seven streams together constitute a roadmap towards a developed India, with greater self-reliance expected to strengthen the country’s economic and strategic position.
He urged the media to highlight what he described as positive stories of India’s transformation, while asserting that manufacturing, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, defence, clean energy and cultural influence would need to progress together to achieve the country’s development ambitions.
