Senior Punjab Congress leaders Pawan Dewan and Satvir Singh Palijikki held discussions with Canadian Member of Parliament Amandeep Kaur Sodhi in Brampton on Monday, with India-Canada trade relations, the proposed Free Trade Agreement and immigration-related concerns of Indian students and the diaspora figuring prominently.
The delegation met Sodhi at her Brampton Centre constituency office. It was led by former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Pawan Dewan and former Planning Board chairman, SBS Nagar, Satvir Singh Palijikki.
Liberal Party of Canada National Vice-President Hardam Mangat, Amarpreet Aulakh, Yadwinder Sodhi and Ajeet Sodhi were also part of the delegation.
Dewan and Palijikki described the meeting as constructive and said detailed discussions were held on India-Canada relations, particularly bilateral trade and ongoing negotiations between the two countries on a Free Trade Agreement.
According to the leaders, Sodhi said Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu were working with their Indian counterparts to finalise the terms and conditions of the proposed trade agreement. The discussions are being held under the leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they said.
Immigration issues also featured prominently during the meeting, particularly challenges faced by Indian students in Canada.
The delegation also raised concerns affecting the wider Indian community in Canada. These included matters related to property held in India by members of the diaspora and visa-related issues faced by their family members seeking to travel to Canada.
Dewan and Palijikki said the discussions provided an opportunity to highlight issues concerning both bilateral economic relations and the Indian community in Canada.
The meeting comes amid continuing engagement between India and Canada on trade and other areas of bilateral relations, with immigration remaining an important concern for Indian students and families with links to both countries.
