The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested Sukhpinder Singh alias Sukhi Singh, who was wanted by Punjab Police in connection with a firing case in Batala, officials said.
Singh, a resident of Loh Chap village in Batala taluka of Gurdaspur district, was traced to a hotel in Palanpur following information received by Gujarat ATS Superintendent of Police K. Siddharth.
The case against him was registered at Sekhwan Police Station in Batala under Sections 109, 324(4) and 3(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, besides Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
Acting on the information, senior officers formed a team under Siddharth’s supervision and headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsh Upadhyay. After verifying the input, the team searched Hotel Sundara in Palanpur on the evening of August 22 and found Singh there. He was subsequently brought to the Gujarat ATS office in Ahmedabad for questioning.
During preliminary interrogation, Police Sub-Inspector M.L. Solanki was informed that Singh was associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, according to the ATS.
The ATS said Singh told investigators that he, along with Sahibdeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh and Vikramjit Singh alias Vicky, opened fire near the shelter of complainant Mehakdeepsinh on July 20.
According to officials, Singh further disclosed that after the incident he travelled with Vikramjit Singh to the latter’s paternal aunt Harmeet Kaur’s house in Thikriwal village of Qadian taluka. He allegedly handed over his licensed .30-06 rifle to his cousin Manjot Singh before staying at a hotel near Kharar for around seven to eight days.
The ATS said Singh subsequently travelled through Delhi, Hyderabad and Nanded in Maharashtra before reaching Palanpur.
Police records cited by the ATS show that Singh has been named in several criminal cases. These include cases registered in 2018 at Dhariwal Police Station under provisions relating to attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and the Arms Act; at Civil Lines Batala Police Station in 2019 for offences including attempt to murder, assault, criminal intimidation and violations of the Arms Act; and at Amirgadh Police Station in Banaskantha district of Gujarat in 2019 under Section 304 of the IPC and Arms Act provisions.
He was also booked at Ranger Nangal Police Station in 2021 in a case involving provisions related to attempt to murder, rioting and the Arms Act. In 2023, the Special State Operations Cell (SSOC), Punjab, registered a case against him under provisions including attempt to murder, abetment and criminal conspiracy, along with sections of the Arms Act and NDPS Act. Tanda Police Station also registered a case under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
Singh had also spent nine months in jail in Dubai in 2021 in connection with a drugs/ICE-related case, officials said.
The Gujarat ATS has informed Punjab Police about his detention. Proceedings are underway to hand Singh over to Punjab Police for further legal action in the Batala firing case.
