An Indian specialised tunnel rescue team on Sunday joined the Nepali Army in search and rescue operations at hydropower tunnel sites in the Chilime and Langtang areas, as India stepped up assistance following the devastating floods in Nepal.
The Indian Embassy in Nepal said the team worked alongside the Nepali Army at the tunnel sites and would continue operations in close coordination with local authorities.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the team managed to enter a tunnel near the Langtang hydroelectric project despite difficult weather conditions and recovered the mortal remains of one person. Search and rescue efforts in the area are continuing.
Meanwhile, a 19-member specialised forensic team from India began work in Kathmandu to assist Nepal in analysing DNA samples for the identification of victims’ mortal remains.
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava met the forensic team and briefed its members. The team subsequently held discussions with officials at the Nepal Police’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory and the Forensics Department of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
The MEA also said that, as of 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, 403 Indian nationals had safely crossed into Nepal from China, according to local government sources on the Chinese side. Another 500 Indian nationals remained on the China side and were reported to be safe.
Earlier on Sunday, the fourth Indian flight carrying relief assistance arrived in Kathmandu with 11 tonnes of supplies. The consignment included blankets, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, plastic sheets and hygiene kits, along with search-and-rescue equipment for the tunnel team and resources for the forensic experts.
India’s assistance comes as rescue and relief operations continue in Nepal following catastrophic flooding that has affected several areas near the Nepal-China border.
