The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has criticised Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat over his recent remarks in the US on Hindu-Muslim coexistence, saying the message of “one humanity” should also be reflected in India’s domestic political and social environment.
In an editorial published in its mouthpiece Saamana on Monday, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party referred to Bhagwat’s recent address in New York, where he invoked the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and said that a Hindu who believes there should be no Muslims in India was not truly a Hindu.
The editorial alleged that Bhagwat’s remarks abroad were at odds with developments in India and accused BJP leaders at the Centre and in states of contributing to an atmosphere of exclusion and polarisation involving minority communities.
It cited an alleged “purification ceremony” carried out by local BJP activists in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following a public address by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The editorial questioned whether such conduct was consistent with the message of spiritual consciousness articulated by Bhagwat in the US.
The Sena (UBT) also criticised what it described as the RSS’s silence on international humanitarian crises, including civilian deaths in Gaza, questioning whether its position on human rights was applied consistently.
The editorial further alleged financial irregularities surrounding the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and claimed that Bhagwat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not commented on the allegations. It argued that Bhagwat’s focus on Lord Krishna during his US engagements helped avoid questions concerning the Ram Temple movement.
Drawing on the Bhagavad Gita, the editorial said spiritual leadership should be based on selflessness, equanimity and freedom from ego rather than social division or political posturing.
It urged the RSS leadership to align its international message of harmony and universal humanity with action within India.
