Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday claimed it had launched a combined missile and drone attack on US military bases in Jordan, describing the operation as retaliation for US-Israeli strikes on Iran’s Larak Island.
According to an IRGC statement cited by Iran’s Fars news agency, the attack targeted “technical and maintenance infrastructure” and areas where “enemy fighter jets” were stationed at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq US bases in Jordan. The IRGC claimed the strikes caused heavy damage.
“Aggression and crimes will not solve the enemy’s desperation in attempting to weaken the Islamic Republic’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, and every attack will be met with even more devastating responses,” the statement said.
The reported Iranian attack came after US forces struck two IRGC rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday. US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins said the launchers were being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” Hawkins said, adding that US forces were closely monitoring the area and remained prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through the strategic waterway.
The strike was reportedly the first known US attack against Iran since late July.
Larak is a small Iranian island off the coast of Bandar Abbas, east of Qeshm Island and south of Hormuz Island, near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC said several military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded in the US-Israeli attack on the island in Hormozgan province on Sunday night, according to Xinhua news agency.
In a statement carried by its official outlet Sepah News, the IRGC vowed “punishment for the aggressor”.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing unofficial reports, said at least two people were killed and two others injured in what it described as a US drone strike on Larak Island.
