Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda has opened up about his deep bond with filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, recalling the struggles they endured while making their breakthrough film ‘Arjun Reddy’.
Speaking at the pre-release event of director Venu Gopal Reddy’s romantic drama ‘Romanchakam’, which is being presented by Vanga, Deverakonda said his relationship with the filmmaker goes beyond the conventional actor-director equation.
“I can’t express the love I have for Sandeep in words. It’s not just a director-actor relationship. It’s not just a brother relationship or a friend relationship. It’s something else,” he said.
Recalling the circumstances surrounding ‘Arjun Reddy’, Deverakonda said the two were taking major risks at a time when neither had money, influence or an established fan base.
“Back then, we went to war together. We didn’t know what we were doing. Had the film not worked out, we would have gone crazy. Both of us didn’t have money. We did not have influence. We didn’t have any pull,” he recalled, adding that he had not yet built a following because ‘Pelli Choopulu’ had not been released.
Deverakonda said what he misses most is not the success that followed the 2017 film but the journey of making it together.
“I miss Sandeep Reddy not for Arjun Reddy’s success or what it has gone on to become. I miss him for all the moments we spent together — building a film together, sharing our lives, our stress and sharing our battles,” he said.
He also recalled how producers Pranay and Prabhakar had mortgaged their land to raise money for the film, placing their faith in Vanga and, subsequently, in him.
“You put your entire family, earnings and future on film. Sandeep will go to any extent for me and I will go to any extent for Sandeep,” Deverakonda said.
Meanwhile, ‘Romanchakam’ is scheduled to release worldwide on September 3. The film generated interest after its glimpse was released a few weeks ago.
Starring Sumanth Prabhas and Ananthika Sanilkumar, the film appears to explore a romance that takes an unexpected turn, with the two characters moving from being deeply in love to developing hostility towards each other. Upendra Limaye’s character, who appears to be a police officer, has also added to the intrigue.
Venkatesh Kakumanu, Narendra Ravi, Mani Aegurla and Sai Sohan are among the other actors in the film.
Produced by Pranay Reddy Vanga, ‘Romanchakam’ has cinematography by Pavan Pappula and music by Vasuki Vaibhav. Gobind Kotap has choreographed the songs, while Akunur Keerthana has handled costumes.
