Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday departed for Kyrgyzstan after concluding his state visit to Uzbekistan, where he held extensive talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and oversaw efforts to deepen bilateral ties.
Uzbekistan Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov saw Modi off at the airport.
The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi’s visit had reaffirmed the “deep and enduring bonds” between India and Uzbekistan. In Kyrgyzstan, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Leadership Summit and continue India’s engagement with the region.
Modi will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan.
Earlier in Tashkent, Modi held what the Prime Minister’s Office described as a “fruitful” meeting with Mirziyoyev. During the visit, India and Uzbekistan elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, energy, space, healthcare, trade, education, culture and youth exchanges.
At the Kuksaroy Presidential Palace, the two leaders held wide-ranging discussions covering trade and investment, critical minerals, defence and security, innovation and start-ups, digital public infrastructure and UPI, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, education, tourism, space and people-to-people ties.
Modi welcomed progress towards a long-term arrangement for the supply of uranium from Uzbekistan to India and stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals. The two countries are seeking more resilient supply chains for resources important to clean energy, advanced manufacturing and strategic technologies.
India and Uzbekistan also set a target of $5 billion in bilateral trade by 2030 and agreed to organise a business summit to further expand trade and investment.
The leaders decided to establish a Foreign Ministers-led mechanism to advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to elevate the existing Inter-Governmental Commission to the ministerial level.
Highlighting the longstanding civilisational and people-to-people links between the two countries, Modi welcomed the growing popularity of Yoga in Uzbekistan. During his visit, he also attended a Yoga session organised by the Yoga Federation of Uzbekistan.
On the 60th anniversary of the passing of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Modi announced the Lal Bahadur Shastri Scholarship for Hindi language studies for Uzbek students.
