The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials of the Regional Pay & Accounts Office, CISF, Ranchi, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 48,400 from a colleague in connection with the processing of allowance bills.
The arrested officials have been identified as Senior Accounts Officer Santosh Kumar Mahto and Assistant Accounts Officers Sunil Kumar and Sujit Kumar Singh.
According to the CBI, the officials allegedly sought the bribe from a CISF Head Constable posted at NTPC, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for processing and releasing payments against various bills submitted by personnel of his unit. These included Travelling Allowance (TA) and Children Education Allowance bills.
The agency registered a case against the three public servants on Wednesday and laid a trap at the Regional Pay & Accounts Office, CISF, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ranchi, on Thursday.
During the trap operation, the three officials were allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 48,400 from the complainant. The CBI said the bribe amount was recovered from them.
The agency is also conducting searches at five locations linked to the accused in Ranchi and Dhanbad. Incriminating documents and cash have reportedly been seized during the searches.
The three accused are scheduled to be produced before the competent court on Friday.
Former Odisha Postal Official Arrested
In a separate case, the CBI arrested an absconding former postal official in Odisha in connection with an alleged Rs 13.98 lakh Post Office savings fraud dating back to 2015.
Shabda Swain, who was then Branch Postmaster of Bonda Post Office in Odisha, was arrested in Bargarh, the agency said.
According to the CBI, Swain allegedly misappropriated Rs 13.98 lakh collected from depositors during her posting as Branch Postmaster from 2008 to 2014. The agency alleged that the deposits were not properly recorded in official records and that false entries were made in depositors’ passbooks.
The accused had allegedly been absconding since charges were framed on December 31, 2015, in CBI ACB Bhubaneswar case RC 17(A)/2014-BBS. A non-bailable warrant was issued against her in 2022.
