Bikram Majithia Arrested in Statewide Vigilance Crackdown

Amritsar, June 25, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

In a major development, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia was taken into custody on Wednesday morning by the Vigilance Bureau. The arrest came during a sweeping joint operation conducted by the Punjab Police and Vigilance teams at 25 locations across the state, including his Green Avenue residence in Amritsar and his official residence in Chandigarh.

The team led by Vigilance SSP Raghbir Singh arrested Majithia from his Amritsar home, where tensions escalated as officials entered the premises. Majithia and his wife, Ganieve Kaur Majithia, who is the sitting MLA from Majitha, streamed live on social media, accusing the authorities of barging in without proper authorization. Ganieve Kaur claimed that nearly 30 officers entered without permission and conducted the search aggressively.

Simultaneous raids were also carried out at Majithia’s official residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 4. Majithia later stated that more than 50 officials stormed his house, barred press and legal counsel from entering, and raided his property in his absence. He denounced the operation as politically motivated.

According to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Neel Garg, these actions form part of an impartial, ongoing investigation into a massive drug trafficking network. Garg confirmed that 9 locations were raided in Amritsar alone, and 25 operations are being conducted across Punjab, emphasizing that the Vigilance Bureau is operating without bias or political influence.

The arrest is linked to a case dating back to December 2021, when Majithia was booked under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act—notably Sections 25 (use of a premises for committing an offence), 27A (financing of drug trafficking), and 29 (abetment). The case originated from a 2018 Special Task Force (STF) report that accused him of enabling international drug smuggling between 2004 and 2014.

Majithia has repeatedly denied all charges, maintaining that the investigation is part of a larger political vendetta by the ruling AAP government, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

In March 2025, the Supreme Court of India directed Majithia to cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Patiala, after the Punjab government submitted that he was evading interrogation. The court stressed that his full cooperation was crucial to ensuring transparency and thoroughness in the probe.

With Majithia now in custody, the investigation is expected to accelerate. Legal experts suggest that this arrest marks a turning point in the high-profile case, though no formal chargesheet has yet been filed. Vigilance officials are continuing searches and interrogations to unearth the financial and operational links of the alleged narcotic syndicate.
