Ahmedabad Customs officials have seized 244.16 grams of 24-carat gold worth Rs 35.84 lakh after intercepting a woman passenger allegedly carrying gold paste concealed inside her body at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The seizure was made by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Ahmedabad Customs following specific information received from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The passenger was intercepted after arriving from Dubai on Flight FZ-437 on Monday.
According to Customs officials, a detailed examination revealed that the woman had allegedly hidden around 270 grams of gold paste inside her body. The recovered material was later processed and converted into a 24-carat gold TT bar weighing 244.16 grams.
The seized gold has been valued at Rs 35,84,269 and has been taken into custody under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the smuggling attempt and whether the passenger was acting independently or as part of an organised network.
The seizure is among a series of recent gold smuggling cases detected at Ahmedabad airport, particularly involving passengers arriving from Gulf countries.
Last week, Customs officials intercepted a woman passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi and allegedly recovered two 24-carat gold TT bars weighing 233 grams concealed inside her clothing. The seized gold was valued at around Rs 34.3 lakh.
Earlier this month, officials seized 729 grams of gold jewellery worth nearly Rs 98.79 lakh from another passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi. The jewellery was allegedly concealed inside a handbag and beneath garments to evade customs duty.
Authorities have also reported cases involving newer concealment methods. On July 22, two Dubai-bound passengers were allegedly found carrying 129.18 grams of gold paste hidden inside shirt collars, while another passenger from Dubai was arrested earlier this month for allegedly carrying gold paste worth more than Rs 4 crore concealed in specially modified undergarments.
