Supreme Court Restrains Unauthorised Sharing of Court Hearing Recordings on Social Media

New Delhi, July 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Supreme Court has issued an interim direction prohibiting the unauthorised extraction, sharing, monetisation and uploading of audio and video recordings of judicial proceedings on social media and other digital platforms without prior approval from the competent court authorities.

The interim order was passed by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana while hearing a writ petition seeking the implementation of a uniform framework for live streaming and recording of court proceedings across the country.

The Bench directed that no person or entity shall extract, disseminate, monetise, post, repost, upload, transmit, modify, store or host recordings of court proceedings without obtaining prior permission from the Secretary General of the Supreme Court or the Registrar General of the concerned High Court.

The Court, however, clarified that the interim restriction would not affect the reporting of judicial proceedings by recognised and accredited news organisations.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court impleaded all High Courts as parties to the proceedings along with major social media intermediaries and technology companies. Notices were issued to the Union Government, the Bar Council of India, all High Courts, and digital platforms including LinkedIn, Meta Platforms, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Google, X Corp and YouTube.

The apex court also directed the Union Government to submit a proposal identifying the nodal ministries responsible for implementing the reliefs sought in the petition.

Further, all High Courts have been asked to file status reports detailing the adoption of the Model Rules for live streaming and recording of court proceedings circulated by the Supreme Court. The reports are also required to examine the feasibility and impact of continuous and uninterrupted live streaming of judicial proceedings.

The Supreme Court directed its Secretary General and the Registrar Generals of all High Courts to upload the order on their respective official websites for public information.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on July 31.
