Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Vows to Defend Nation’s Sovereignty, Dignity and Independence

Mexico City, September 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to firmly defend the country’s sovereignty, dignity and independence, while stressing that Mexico seeks cooperation and dialogue with all nations without compromising its principles.

Addressing her second State of the Union Address at the National Palace on Tuesday, Sheinbaum said cooperation should not be confused with submission and friendship should not require Mexico to abandon its core principles.

“In Mexico, we want cooperation, dialogue and understanding with all nations, but cooperation does not mean submission, friendship does not mean renouncing our principles,” she said.

Sheinbaum said that as long as she remained President of Mexico, she would steadfastly defend the country’s sovereignty, dignity and independence.

She acknowledged difficulties in Mexico-US relations, particularly over the treatment of Mexican migrants in the United States. She said 17 Mexican nationals had died at US immigration detention centres, while many others had been arrested during immigration raids across the country.

According to Sheinbaum, the Mexican government has filed complaints and demanded that the rights of migrants be respected.

Addressing the impact of US mass deportations, she highlighted the government’s “Mexico te abraza” (“Mexico Embraces You”) programme, which she said has assisted more than 281,000 deported or repatriated Mexican nationals.

The programme provides returning citizens with hot meals, transportation to their communities, medical and psychological assistance, as well as identification documents.

On trade relations with the United States, Sheinbaum said the two countries remained engaged in dialogue and expressed hope that agreements would be reached.

“We are engaged in an ongoing dialogue with the US government, and we hope to reach an understanding,” she said.

On security cooperation, Sheinbaum said Mexico and the United States had reached agreements based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared but differentiated responsibility, mutual respect and trust, and cooperation without subordination.
