Actress Nimisha Sajayan has recalled the impact of her 2021 Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, revealing that its message prompted some men to rethink their approach to household responsibilities.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Nimisha said she received messages from men who told her they had started doing their own household chores after watching the film, including washing their tiffin boxes before returning home.
“I think in today’s society, women are independent, strong, they keep taking care of themselves. So I think after the release of The Great Indian Kitchen, I got many messages from men saying that ‘listen, now we wash our tiffin after going home’, you know, because after the film, you know, I can see that shift,” she said.
The actress emphasised that the film was not intended simply to portray women as victims. Instead, she said, it sought to make audiences examine how women are treated and how their contributions within households can often be taken for granted.
“It’s not about bechari women, it was more about the way men treat women, how you take things for granted,” Nimisha said.
She was discussing the film’s impact when asked whether she had watched its Hindi remake, Mrs., which stars Sanya Malhotra in the lead. Nimisha said she had not yet had the opportunity to watch it.
The Great Indian Kitchen, which was released directly on OTT in January 2021, starred Nimisha alongside Suraj Venjaramoodu. The film follows an educated woman who enters an arranged marriage and gradually finds herself confined by the expectations of a deeply patriarchal household, where cooking, cleaning and serving men are treated as her unquestioned responsibilities.
Nimisha has now taken on another woman-centric story with Babita Singh Reporting, which premiered on August 28.
The film follows Babita, an underestimated police officer who investigates the murder of her childhood friend while navigating challenges in her personal and marital life.
