The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the West Bengal Police to provide adequate armed security to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra after she was allegedly targeted with eggs during a recent visit to her Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya ordered that two police personnel be deployed with Moitra whenever she visits her constituency to ensure that she is not harassed or obstructed in carrying out her duties. The security arrangement will remain in place for 30 days, with the next hearing scheduled for October 1.
The court said Moitra should inform the police in advance about the dates of her visits so that appropriate security arrangements can be made.
Moitra had approached the High Court alleging that politically motivated protests and disturbances occur whenever she visits her constituency, making it difficult for her to discharge her responsibilities as an MP.
Her lawyer, Kalyan Banerjee, told the court that eggs, potatoes and stones had allegedly been thrown at her during visits and claimed that she had not been provided security. He also pointed out that some former Trinamool Congress leaders who joined other political parties had been given security.
The court observed that attacks on an elected MP could not be allowed and directed the state to deal with such incidents strictly, stressing that MPs must be able to perform their duties in their constituencies without obstruction.
On the same day, Moitra faced another protest during a Trinamool Congress workers’ conference in Nadia district’s Chapra. Protesters allegedly displayed black flags around her vehicle and raised “Go back” slogans as she left the venue.
Moitra alleged that BJP workers and supporters, along with former Trinamool members, were behind the disruption. She accused party defectors of acting dishonestly and alleged that Trinamool workers were being subjected to pressure from the police and administration.
BJP’s Chapra IT cell in-charge Gopal Das and local resident Ambarjit Roy, however, denied the BJP’s involvement. They alleged that Moitra was responsible for unrest, drug-related activities and extortion in the area, and claimed the black flags were shown by local residents protesting what they described as her alleged remarks against Hindu gods and goddesses.
Police reached the area following the incident to control the situation.
