The Congress high command has summoned Telangana Forest, Environment and Endowment Minister Konda Surekha to New Delhi amid a disciplinary controversy involving remarks made by her daughter against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
Surekha left for Delhi on Tuesday and is scheduled to meet Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. She has also sought an appointment with party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Revanth Reddy and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud have also reached the national capital amid speculation that the party leadership could take action against Surekha and Telangana Planning Board Vice-Chairman G. Chinna Reddy over alleged indiscipline.
The TPCC Disciplinary Committee submitted its report to Goud on August 25, reportedly recommending that Surekha be dropped from the state Cabinet and Chinna Reddy be removed from his post. Goud subsequently forwarded the report to the central leadership for a final decision.
The disciplinary proceedings against Surekha relate to remarks made by her daughter, Konda Sushmita, against Revanth Reddy at an event in Parkala in Warangal district. The panel reportedly observed that Surekha should have condemned the remarks and noted that this was not the first alleged instance of her violating party discipline.
In her response to the show-cause notice, Surekha distanced herself from her daughter’s comments, arguing that they represented personal views and that she should not be held politically responsible for them. She sought withdrawal of the notice.
Chinna Reddy, who holds Cabinet rank as Planning Board Vice-Chairman, also sought withdrawal of the notice against him. He said remarks he made at the inauguration of a mandal Congress office in Gopalpet, Wanaparthy district, on August 16 were an expression of grievances among longstanding party leaders and workers. His comments were directed at the party leadership and Wanaparthy MLA T. Megha Reddy.
Several senior Telangana leaders are currently in Delhi, including Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao and Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu are also expected to travel to Delhi.
The leadership is also expected to discuss a possible Cabinet reshuffle and expansion and appointments to nominated posts.
Revanth Reddy is reportedly seeking the removal of Surekha and Chinna Reddy. The final decision is expected after consultations involving the Chief Minister, AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natrajan, Goud and other senior leaders.
At a press conference on August 24, Revanth Reddy had declined to comment on the controversy, saying the matter was before the party’s disciplinary mechanism. He had stressed that discipline was important and that the high command’s decision would be final and binding on all leaders.
