Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the government’s emphasis on frugality despite the reported 7.8 per cent GDP growth, arguing that strong economic figures have not translated into meaningful relief for ordinary people.
Warring said the GDP growth rate offered little consolation to millions of Indians struggling with inflation and unemployment. He maintained that economic statistics were of limited value if their impact was not being felt by people in their daily lives.
“There is no point in celebrating the GDP statistics when these do not help people on the ground,” the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president said.
Warring questioned why people were repeatedly being advised to exercise financial restraint, including suggestions against buying gold or going abroad, if the country’s economic performance was as strong as the GDP figures indicated.
He said the growth figures might generate positive headlines and a “feel good” impression, but the economic difficulties faced by the common man remained largely unchanged. According to him, essential commodities required for everyday life continued to remain beyond the reach of many households.
The Congress leader also cited the prices of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and LPG, as examples of the pressure on household budgets. He claimed that fuel prices had continued to rise even when international prices had declined substantially before the US-Iran war.
“Let the common man also have a feel of what does the 7.8 percent GDP mean to him,” Warring said.
He urged the Prime Minister to reduce the prices of petroleum products, arguing that fuel costs have a direct or indirect impact on people across the country.
