An Indian national has been killed in a wave of intensified Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday.
Zelensky said the Indian citizen was among 12 people killed in Russian strikes carried out across several Ukrainian regions over five days of heightened attacks. He did not disclose the victim’s identity or the location where the Indian national was killed.
The Embassy of India in Kyiv confirmed the death and said it was coordinating with the victim’s family, company and Ukrainian authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in an attack in Ukraine,” the Embassy said in a post on X. It added that it was providing “all possible assistance” for the early repatriation of the remains.
According to Zelensky, a strike on a railway depot in Kyiv killed seven people. He said the Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Dnipro regions also came under attack, with dozens of people injured.
“A significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack,” Zelensky said.
He accused Russia of directing its strikes to maximise destruction and argued that the number of casualties depended directly on the availability of air defence systems.
Zelensky appealed for additional international assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s defence against missile and drone attacks, amid reports of dwindling supplies of air defence systems.
The killing of the Indian national comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek.
“We need to move from endless war to an end to the war, to a cessation of hostilities,” Modi told Putin on Monday, stressing that every day the conflict continues represents a setback for humanity.
Zelensky also highlighted shortages of Patriot air defence systems, saying Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian attacks remained closely linked to international military assistance.
