Five more Indian nationals have been rescued from Nepal since Monday, taking the total number of Indians rescued to 163 following devastating floods in the Himalayan nation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.
The MEA also said that 151 Indian nationals left China on Tuesday.
The Ministry said the Indian tunnel rescue team, after establishing access to hydropower tunnels in Chilime, faced several challenges, including extremely restricted entry space, limitations on the use of specialised equipment because of the terrain and marshy conditions inside the tunnel.
Using innovative techniques and improvised floats, the team managed to move deeper into the tunnel. The operation will continue on Wednesday to locate and rescue any individuals who may still be trapped inside, the MEA said.
Meanwhile, an Indian forensic team expanded its operations in coordination with Nepalese counterparts. The team is examining DNA samples and conducting related analysis to help expedite the processing of samples in Nepal.
Nepal’s death toll from last week’s catastrophic floods has crossed 1,000, with bodies continuing to be recovered along riverbanks across several districts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said 1,003 bodies had been recovered as of Tuesday.
Southern Chitwan district reported the highest number of recovered bodies at 321, followed by Nawalparasi East with 216.
According to the NDRRMA, 3,916 people, including 583 foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for. The missing include personnel from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police, as well as government employees.
The authority said 639 people working at hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors also remain unaccounted for.
Search, rescue and relief operations continue across the affected districts.
