The death toll from the devastating floods that struck Rasuwa and surrounding districts in Nepal has climbed to 1,114, with search, rescue and relief operations continuing across the affected areas.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said 1,114 bodies, including body parts recovered from various locations, had been retrieved by 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Southern Chitwan district recorded the highest number of recoveries at 348, followed by Nawalparasi East with 217, Nawalparasi West with 190, Nuwakot with 155, Gorkha with 66, Dhading with 59, Rasuwa with 41 and Tanahun with 38.
Authorities said 95 bodies have so far been identified and handed over to their relatives.
The NDRRMA said 3,916 people remain unaccounted for. The missing include government employees, security personnel, elected representatives, foreign nationals, Nepalis accompanying foreign tourists, local residents and hydropower project workers.
However, figures released by Nepal Police differ. Police data collected until 8 a.m. Wednesday put the number of people still out of contact at 4,858, including 583 foreign nationals.
The whereabouts of hundreds of people reported missing from flood-hit hydropower projects also remain unknown. According to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), 983 people linked to 11 hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors in Rasuwa and Nuwakot are still unaccounted for.
Nepali Army personnel, assisted by Indian and Chinese tunnel rescue teams, are working to access tunnels at several projects in search of those reported missing.
IPPAN said rescue efforts were continuing at the Upper Trishuli 3A, Chilime, Langtang Khola, Trishuli 3B and Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower projects.
At the 216-MW Upper Trishuli-1 project, 1,433 people were working when the floods struck. Of them, 876 have either been rescued or established contact, while the whereabouts of the remaining workers are still unknown.
At the 111-MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, 91 people remained missing as of Tuesday. A Nepali Army-led team inspected the site on Monday but reported finding no one inside the powerhouse tunnel.
Search operations are continuing as authorities race to locate survivors and account for those still missing.
