Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faced protests while attending a party workers’ conference in Chapra block of West Bengal’s Nadia district on Tuesday, with demonstrators surrounding her vehicle and waving black flags.
The Krishnanagar Lok Sabha MP was reportedly unable to leave the spot even after getting into her car. There were also allegations that attempts were made to damage the vehicle.
The incident triggered political tension in the Chapra area, with allegations and counter-allegations between the TMC and BJP. TMC leaders alleged that BJP workers and supporters were behind the protest, while local BJP representatives denied involvement.
Moitra, who has previously faced protests and alleged attacks during visits to her Krishnanagar parliamentary constituency, has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking security. The court permitted her plea, following which two police personnel are to provide security to the MP in the Krishnanagar area.
Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s workers’ meeting, Moitra said the programme had been successful and encouraging. She said that in the presence of MLAs from Palashipara and Jalangi, a strategy had been discussed to strengthen and rejuvenate the party’s organisation at the local level.
Referring to the protests, Moitra alleged that the disruption was being created with the involvement of TMC defectors and the BJP. She criticised former party members who had left the TMC, calling them “dishonest”, and referred to disciplinary action taken against some Zilla Parishad members for alleged anti-party activities.
She also alleged that TMC workers were being harassed through police and administrative pressure.
Meanwhile, Chapra BJP IT cell in-charge Gopal Das and local resident Ambarjit Roy rejected the allegations against the BJP. They alleged that Moitra herself was responsible for unrest, drug-related activities and extortion politics in the area.
They further claimed that the black flags were shown by local people protesting what they described as Moitra’s alleged remarks about Hindu gods and goddesses, and maintained that the BJP had no role in the alleged attack on her vehicle.
