The United States launched fresh strikes on targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), marking another escalation in hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
US President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face even more severe attacks if it retaliated against the latest strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.
“If Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday.
He described the latest strikes as “large and powerful” and warned that an even bigger attack was being prepared.
Trump also told Fox News that US forces had destroyed a significant number of Iranian radar systems, including equipment that Tehran had attempted to rebuild.
“This is a very big hit today. If it goes a third time, they’re going to be totally wiped out as a country,” Trump said, adding that the USS George Washington and other US forces were fully prepared.
According to a Fox News report, Trump said Gulf allies had been notified ahead of the strikes.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the latest operation at noon Eastern Time (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, saying US forces had targeted IRGC positions in Iran.
CENTCOM said the strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US military personnel deployed in the region.
Explosions were reported in the Iranian port cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as on Qeshm Island.
Iranian media also reported a military response. Semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing sources, said Iranian forces launched missiles towards US bases in regional countries on Tuesday evening.
The IRGC warned that the United States “will regret its new attacks”, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
The escalation has also raised fresh concerns over commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime risk organisation Marisks said two crude oil tankers were struck by unidentified projectiles while transiting the strategic waterway on Monday evening.
The latest developments add to mounting tensions around one of the world’s most important energy routes, with further military action threatening to deepen regional instability.
