Maryland Lt. Governor Aruna Miller has criticised mass immigration arrests across Maryland and Virginia, arguing that authorities can enforce immigration laws and remove violent offenders without treating entire communities as security threats.
In a statement, Miller said her own experience as an immigrant had shaped her understanding of the opportunities offered by the United States and the responsibility to protect them.
She stressed that public safety depended on trust between communities and law enforcement. Fear, she said, could discourage people from going to work, taking their children to school, seeking medical care or cooperating with authorities.
“Public safety depends on trust,” Miller said, warning that when people are afraid to engage with essential services or law enforcement, the resulting loss of trust makes communities less safe.
Miller said Maryland would continue to support both public safety and the dignity and constitutional rights of people living in the state.
“Those principles are not in conflict. They are fundamental to who we are,” she said.
The lieutenant governor said Maryland residents had a right to feel safe in their communities and called for violent offenders to be held accountable. At the same time, she said, every person should be treated with dignity and afforded constitutional protections.
Miller also cited figures from the US Department of Homeland Security, saying only a fraction of the more than 1,300 people arrested across Maryland and Virginia had previously been convicted of or charged with crimes.
She criticised what she described as broad immigration enforcement operations in neighbourhoods, saying the separation of parents from children and the fear created among families and workers did not improve public safety.
