Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has joined the online debate surrounding Kriti Sanon’s recent Raksha Bandhan advertisement, criticising the actor’s choice of attire in the campaign.
The controversy began after jewellery brand GIVA released a Raksha Bandhan-themed advertisement featuring Kriti in an off-white outfit comprising a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt.
The advertisement sparked a debate on social media, with several users questioning whether the styling was appropriate for a campaign associated with the traditional Indian festival.
Kangana addressed the controversy through an Instagram Story on Monday, arguing that women today have a wide range of clothing choices but should consider the occasion while dressing.
“It’s a wonderful time to be a woman, our closets are full of variety of clothes, today’s woman is a global woman,” Kangana wrote, before listing various traditional and western styles available to women.
She then questioned why someone would choose what she described as “bikini/under garments” while tying a Rakhi to a brother and concluded by calling the advertisement “intentionally creepy”.
The post came as the advertisement continued to attract criticism online. Some social media users accused the campaign of disregarding Hindu traditions, while others argued that it reflected changing social norms around clothing and personal expression.
Kriti has not publicly responded to the criticism or Kangana’s comments so far.
The controversy has once again triggered a wider discussion on how traditional festivals are represented in contemporary advertising and whether brands should adapt their creative choices to cultural expectations.
