At 24, Karnataka goalkeeper Mohith HS is set to take charge of India’s goalkeeping duties at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, following in the footsteps of legendary custodians such as Ranganathan Francis, Shankar Laxman, Adrian D’Souza and PR Sreejesh.
The upcoming World Cup, scheduled to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30, will mark Mohith’s maiden appearance in the premier international tournament. He will share goalkeeping responsibilities with experienced custodian Suraj Karkera as part of the Indian squad.
Although Mohith does not have the same international experience as Karkera, his recent performances have strengthened his position in the team. His impressive displays during the final phase of the FIH Pro League season played a key role in earning the selectors’ confidence ahead of the World Cup.
Mohith’s entry into hockey was a matter of chance. He was included in his school team as a goalkeeper when the position fell vacant, and his coach felt his height would make him suitable for the role. What began as an unexpected opportunity gradually developed into a professional career.
The Karnataka player later represented India at the Junior World Cup before progressing to the senior national team.
Recalling his ambitions, Mohith said, “I always had a mindset to represent India in major tournaments because when I played in the Junior World Cup, we were not able to finish on the podium; we ended up fourth. So, from that time, it was my dream to do something big for India.”
Mohith also spoke about the influence of former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, whose performances have inspired a generation of Indian goalkeepers.
“We have learnt a lot from him (Sreejesh). But it’s not that we are under pressure to fill those shoes because he has done so well for India. We will give 100% on the ground, and then we will see what happens,” he said.
India enter the World Cup with renewed confidence after a strong finish to their recent FIH Pro League campaign, which included notable victories against the Netherlands and Germany.
“After defeating the Netherlands and Germany (in the FIH Pro League), we have gained a lot of confidence. I think we are up to the mark before the World Cup,” Mohith said.
For the young goalkeeper, the World Cup represents the biggest opportunity of his senior career. He said his aim is to give his best for the country and help India reclaim the world title.
“My personal benchmark is to give my 100% for my country when I step on the field. I haven’t got a bigger opportunity than this so far in my senior career. I will try to make India the world champions once again,” he said.
India’s men’s hockey team has won the FIH World Cup only once, lifting the trophy in 1975 after defeating Pakistan in the final.
