World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, opting to continue his recovery from a lingering wrist injury and ruling himself out of defending the title he won last year.
Tournament organisers confirmed the development on Wednesday.
“Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open. Wishing all the best to our 2025 champion in his recovery process. Can’t wait to welcome you next year!” the organisers said in a statement.
The Spaniard has not competed since the Barcelona Open in April, which followed his run to the Monte-Carlo Masters final earlier that month. His injury troubles have since forced him to miss several major events as he focuses on rehabilitation.
Alcaraz has enjoyed an impressive 2026 season despite the setback, compiling a 22-3 win-loss record, according to the ATP Win/Loss Index. Earlier this year, he completed the Career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open, capturing the only major title previously missing from his collection.
The Cincinnati Open main draw is scheduled to begin on August 13 and conclude on August 23.
In May, Alcaraz also withdrew from Wimbledon and the Queen’s Club Championships because of the persistent right wrist injury. Before that, he had skipped both the Italian Open in Rome and the French Open, where he had been due to defend his title.
The injury had already raised concerns earlier in the year when Alcaraz attended the 2026 Laureus Awards wearing a brace on his right wrist after being named Sportsman of the Year. He later confirmed that medical advice had prompted him to step away from competition to avoid aggravating the problem.
With his withdrawal from Cincinnati, attention will now turn to his recovery timeline and whether he will be fit for the remainder of the hard-court season.
