The Delhi High Court has granted interim relief to Alakh Pandey, founder and CEO of edtech platform Physics Wallah, in a lawsuit seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights against unauthorised use of his name, image and identity on digital platforms.
A single-judge Bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued summons in the suit and directed the removal of certain allegedly infringing online content targeting Pandey. The court said a detailed order explaining the reasons and specifying the content to be taken down would be issued separately.
Appearing for Pandey, senior advocate J. Sai Deepak submitted a compilation of allegedly infringing URLs before the court. The content was classified into three categories — vulgar, obscene and sexually explicit material; content allegedly using Pandey’s personality rights for commercial exploitation; and material involving impersonation of Pandey.
After considering the submissions, the court granted interim protection with respect to certain URLs and restrained the defendants from continuing to host the allegedly infringing content.
The High Court also directed digital platforms including Google, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram and LinkedIn to provide basic subscriber information linked to the identified URLs and websites. The information has been sought to help Pandey pursue appropriate legal remedies against those responsible.
The matter has been listed for further hearing in November.
Pandey had approached the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection against the alleged misuse of his name, likeness, image and identity across online platforms.
The case is part of a growing trend of public figures approaching courts to safeguard their personality and publicity rights. In recent months, several prominent personalities, including former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Gavaskar, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, actors Arjun Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Nagarjuna, Varun Dhawan, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, singer Jubin Nautiyal, filmmaker Karan Johar, podcaster Raj Shamani, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and actor Ravi Kishan have sought or obtained similar protections against unauthorised use of their identities or AI-generated representations.
