Tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams are set to reunite on the doubles court after receiving a wild card entry for the Cincinnati Open, scheduled to be held from August 13 to 23.
The appearance will mark the sisters’ first doubles match together since the 2022 US Open. The Williams duo has enjoyed one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history, winning 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.
While the Cincinnati Open will be their first appearance as a doubles team at the tournament, Serena’s return to competition has already gathered attention. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion ended nearly a four-year absence from the tour earlier this year, returning at Queen’s Club in June, where she partnered Victoria Mboko in doubles. She later featured in another doubles event in Berlin alongside Karolina Muchova.
Serena then made her singles comeback at Wimbledon, where she pushed 20-year-old Maya Joint to three sets before losing in the opening round.
Venus Williams has also been granted a singles wild card for the Cincinnati tournament. Other players receiving singles wild cards include Sloane Stephens, Taylor Townsend, Darja Vidmanova, Elvina Kalieva, Caroline Dolehide and Lois Boisson.
The 46-year-old Venus has a 12-10 record at the Cincinnati Open, having reached the semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2019. She made her WTA Tour debut in 1994 and has won 49 career singles titles, including seven Grand Slam crowns and the 2000 Olympic singles gold medal. She also spent 11 weeks as the world No. 1.
Stephens, who reached the Cincinnati semifinals in 2013, will return to the tournament for the first time since 2023. The 2017 US Open champion has won eight career titles and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 3.
Townsend, the 2023 Cincinnati doubles champion, recently returned to the top 100 after reaching her first WTA Tour singles final in Austin. She will lead the doubles draw as part of the world No. 1 team with Katerina Siniakova.
Qualifying wild cards have been awarded to 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, Akasha Urhobo, Carol Young Suh Lee, Jeline Vandromme and Robin Montgomery, who won her maiden WTA title in June.
