Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday congratulated fast bowler Auqib Nabi after he was selected in India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka, describing the achievement as a landmark moment for the Union Territory and an inspiration for aspiring sportspersons.
In a statement, the Chief Minister’s Office said Abdullah extended his heartfelt congratulations to the young cricketer, calling his selection a matter of immense pride for Jammu and Kashmir. He wished Auqib success on the international stage and expressed confidence that the pacer would make the most of the opportunity and bring laurels to the country.
Auqib has earned his maiden call-up to the Indian Test team as a replacement for the injured Jasprit Bumrah. With this selection, he becomes the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be picked for India’s Test squad.
The pacer earned recognition after an outstanding 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, in which he claimed 60 wickets and played a crucial role in guiding Jammu and Kashmir to their maiden Ranji Trophy title.
While Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik have previously represented India in limited-overs cricket, Auqib is the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to receive a call-up for a Test series.
He was also part of the India A squad that toured Sri Lanka recently, where he impressed by taking six wickets in two first-class matches, strengthening his case for national selection.
India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2026, with Auqib now set to take a significant step in his cricketing career.
