Rijiju Accuses Opposition of Disrupting Parliament as Lok Sabha Passes Two Bills Amid Protests

New Delhi, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday criticised the Opposition for disrupting Parliament instead of participating in debates, after two key legislations were passed during the day’s proceedings.

Speaking outside Parliament, Rijiju said the government had repeatedly appealed to Opposition members to join discussions on the bills, but they chose to create a ruckus rather than take part in the legislative process.

Expressing disappointment, he said members supporting the government participated in the debates, while the Opposition refrained from speaking on the proposed laws. According to Rijiju, the government had consistently encouraged Opposition MPs to present their views on the legislation.

The minister also took aim at the Congress, alleging that the party lacked leadership capable of ensuring constructive participation by its MPs in Parliament. He said he had personally urged Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to encourage party members to engage in the debates, but claimed those efforts did not yield results.

Rijiju further alleged that several important bills had been introduced in Parliament but the Congress had failed to participate in discussions, even though it later accused the government of not allowing the Opposition to speak. He also claimed that MPs from parties such as the CPI(M) were willing to participate in the debate but were prevented from doing so due to pressure from the Congress.

The Union Minister further accused the Congress of ignoring its internal issues and attempting to divert attention by raising what he described as the “Cockroach Party” issue, alleging that the party was preoccupied with internal political rivalries instead of constructive parliamentary debate.

Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026 by voice vote after Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled the legislation amid persistent sloganeering by Opposition members.

The House had resumed proceedings after a brief adjournment at noon, but protests continued as Opposition MPs demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during the Jantar Mantar protests.

Despite repeated appeals by Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the House, for members to maintain order and allow proceedings to continue, the protests persisted. The Bill was nevertheless passed by voice vote before the Chair adjourned the Lok Sabha for the day as disruptions continued.
