The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,125, according to an official update released by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez.
In a report shared on his Telegram channel, Rodriguez said rescue teams have saved 6,462 people, while 60,992 injured survivors have received hospital treatment since the disaster.
The government has also handed over 287 newly built homes to families displaced by the earthquakes. In addition, authorities have assessed 43,679 buildings across the country to determine their structural safety.
Officials are using a colour-coded traffic-light system to classify buildings after inspections. Structures marked green have been declared safe for occupation, yellow-tagged buildings have restricted access, while red-tagged properties have been identified as unsafe and may be demolished.
The twin earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24. Their epicentres were located in the western state of Yaracuy and the central coastal state of La Guaira, with La Guaira suffering the most extensive damage.
According to earlier official figures released by Rodriguez, 10,981 people remain in temporary shelters in La Guaira, while 6,133 are being accommodated in Caracas and another 1,323 in the neighbouring state of Miranda.
Meanwhile, acting President Delcy Rodriguez thanked the international community for extending humanitarian assistance to earthquake-affected families. Speaking after inspecting a relief collection centre in Caracas, she said more than 2,000 tonnes of aid received from 28 countries were being sorted for distribution to temporary shelters.
She said Venezuela was grateful for the global support and emphasised that the country’s priority now was to rebuild the affected areas and help communities recover from the disaster.
