The victory of Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor in the Bankipur Assembly by-election has prompted contrasting reactions from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition parties, with the former calling for introspection and the latter describing the outcome as a reflection of changing public sentiment.
Kishor ended the BJP’s long-held dominance in the constituency by defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 18,963 votes. According to the Election Commission, after all 31 rounds of counting, Kishor secured 63,203 votes against Sinha’s 44,250.
Reacting to the result, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said electoral victories and defeats were an inherent part of democracy and should be accepted gracefully. She said the NDA would review the outcome to identify shortcomings, adding that election results are often shaped by issue-based politics, caste equations and anti-incumbency.
Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav credited Kishor with effectively connecting with voters and creating expectations through his campaign. While describing the BJP candidate as capable and stating that party workers had campaigned extensively, he said the defeat warranted serious reflection.
JD(U) MP Kaushalendra Kumar said the bypoll verdict underscored the need for NDA leaders and workers to intensify their efforts. JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak also sought a detailed grassroots-level assessment of the party’s performance to understand the reasons behind the loss.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan acknowledged that the result fell short of expectations but maintained that a single constituency would not significantly alter Bihar’s political landscape. He said the party would formulate its future strategy after analysing public feedback and addressing any signs of voter dissatisfaction.
Opposition leaders, however, interpreted the result as an indication of a broader political shift. Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav said recent by-election outcomes reflected public dissatisfaction with the government’s functioning and legislative priorities.
His party colleague, MP Awadhesh Prasad, said the result was expected and claimed it signalled a decline in the BJP’s political fortunes. He asserted that the trend would continue in future elections and expressed confidence that a PDA government led by Akhilesh Yadav would come to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2027.
