Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor secured his first electoral victory by winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, marking a significant milestone for the fledgling political outfit and prompting reactions from leaders across the political spectrum.
After 31 rounds of counting, Kishor polled 63,203 votes to defeat BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, who secured 44,250 votes. RJD nominee Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,085 votes. Kishor won the contest by a margin of 18,953 votes, giving the Jan Suraaj Party its maiden electoral success.
Reacting to the result, Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav described Kishor’s victory as a “masterstroke,” saying he had effectively captured the public’s imagination in Bankipur. At the same time, Yadav urged Kishor to fulfil the promises made during the campaign, noting that some of his public statements had changed over time, including references to bringing Bengaluru-like development to the constituency.
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad interpreted the bypoll outcome as part of a broader political trend, claiming it reflected the BJP’s declining electoral fortunes. He asserted that the momentum would continue in future by-elections and predicted a change of government in Uttar Pradesh in 2027 under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav.
JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak called for an in-depth review of the party’s defeat. He said the organisation must examine its shortcomings at the grassroots level, engage directly with workers, and identify the reasons behind the loss before preparing to regain the seat.
The Bankipur bypoll victory is being seen as a major boost for Prashant Kishor’s political ambitions, strengthening the Jan Suraaj Party’s emergence as a new force in Bihar’s political landscape.
