DMK Youth Wing secretary and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin faced criticism on Tuesday from leaders of the MDMK, CPI(M) and BJP over his alleged remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and actor Trisha.
The controversy erupted after videos from Udhayanidhi Stalin’s speech at a DMK protest in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water issue circulated on social media. The remarks drew criticism from political parties, with the women’s wing of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) filing complaints with the Thanjavur East Police and the National Commission for Women.
The police subsequently registered a criminal case against Udhayanidhi Stalin.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko, in a post on X, said the remarks attributed to the Leader of Opposition deserved condemnation. He said a person holding such a constitutional position should maintain restraint in speech and uphold the dignity of political discourse.
Vaiko also cautioned political parties against using the Cauvery issue for political gains, saying Tamil Nadu’s interests could be protected only through a united approach.
CPI(M) Tamil Nadu secretary P. Shanmugam also criticised Udhayanidhi, alleging that the language used during the public meeting was unacceptable. He said politics should not turn into personal attacks or offensive remarks.
BJP state vice-president and actor Khushbu questioned Udhayanidhi’s comments against Trisha and asked whether he would acknowledge the remarks and apologise. She said public figures, especially elected representatives, must avoid statements that demean women and should maintain standards of decency in public life.
Udhayanidhi had addressed the DMK’s protest in Thanjavur against the Centre and the state government over the Cauvery water dispute and demanded that delta districts be declared drought-affected. Videos of his speech later triggered a political controversy.
