Assam’s flood situation remained critical on Monday, with the cumulative death toll from this year’s floods rising to 87, even as the number of affected districts reduced to seven, according to officials.
Data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) showed that more than 1.28 lakh people across 380 villages continue to be affected by floodwaters. Thousands remain displaced, while widespread damage has been reported to homes, agriculture, livestock and public infrastructure.
The worst-affected districts are Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Biswanath. Flooding continues to impact 24 revenue circles, with nearly 14,230 hectares of agricultural land still under water.
Sivasagar remains the hardest-hit district, with around 55,200 people affected, followed by Charaideo (34,050), Jorhat (20,209), Golaghat (10,201) and Dhemaji (8,333).
Relief and rehabilitation efforts are ongoing across the affected regions. Authorities are operating 55 relief camps and relief distribution centres, providing shelter to 11,066 displaced people. An additional 184 individuals are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres outside the camps.
The floods have also caused significant damage to residential properties. Officials reported that 878 houses have suffered partial damage, while another 302 have been completely or severely damaged. In addition, 301 cattle sheds and huts have been destroyed.
The disaster has affected 34,471 animals, while more than 54,500 poultry have reportedly been washed away, dealing a major blow to rural livelihoods.
Infrastructure has also suffered extensive damage, with roads and bridges affected in several areas, particularly in Dhemaji, Charaideo, Biswanath and Cachar districts. Restoration work is underway to reconnect affected areas and restore normal movement.
