The Central government on Monday increased windfall taxes on exports of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), as global crude oil markets continue to witness volatility amid tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
According to a government order, the revised export duties have come into force with immediate effect. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate availability of fuel in the domestic market while responding to fluctuations in international energy prices.
The export duty on petrol has been increased to Rs 3.5 per litre from Rs 2.5 per litre. The government said the revision was intended to safeguard domestic fuel supplies.
The levy on diesel exports has witnessed a sharp increase. Through two separate tax components, the total export duty on diesel has been raised to Rs 25.5 per litre from Rs 15.5 per litre applicable two weeks earlier.
Similarly, the export duty on aviation turbine fuel has been increased to Rs 22 per litre from Rs 14.5 per litre with effect from Monday.
The latest revision follows a series of changes in windfall taxes by the government last month as international crude prices rose due to heightened tensions involving the United States and Iran, improving refining margins.
A Finance Ministry notification issued on July 16 had increased the export duty on diesel to Rs 15.5 per litre from Rs 8.5 per litre, while the levy on ATF exports was raised to Rs 14.5 per litre from Rs 7.5 per litre.
During the same revision, the government reduced the export duty on petrol to Rs 2.5 per litre from Rs 4 per litre.
Earlier, the Centre had also revised the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) on petroleum exports. The duty on petrol exports was increased to Rs 4 per litre from Rs 1.5 per litre, while the levy on diesel exports was reduced to Rs 8.5 per litre from Rs 14 per litre. The export duty on ATF was also lowered to Rs 7.5 per litre from Rs 12.5 per litre.
The latest tax changes come as the government continues to monitor domestic fuel availability and the impact of international crude oil price movements on the Indian energy sector.
