Veteran actress Jaya Prada fondly recalled the extraordinary popularity of the sarees she wore in the iconic song Pyaar Ka Tohfa from the 1984 blockbuster Tohfa, revealing that the trend became so widespread that shops frequently ran out of stock.
Speaking as a special guest on India’s Best Dancer Season 5 alongside veteran actress Meenakshi Seshadri, Jaya Prada reflected on the lasting impact of the song after contestant Ruturaj and choreographer Vaishnavi performed to the evergreen number.
Recalling the phenomenon, the actress said the “Jaya Prada Saree” became a nationwide craze, with soaring demand in theatres and retail stores after the song’s release. She shared that wherever she travelled, fans greeted her by chanting “Tohfa, Tohfa, Tohfa,” making the song one of the most memorable milestones of her career.
Expressing pride in the song’s enduring legacy, Jaya Prada described Pyaar Ka Tohfa as one of the finest songs of her film career and said its popularity has remained unmatched even after more than three decades.
Joining the conversation, Meenakshi Seshadri credited South Indian filmmakers, particularly director K. Raghavendra Rao, with introducing a distinctive visual style to Hindi cinema’s song picturisations. She praised the elegant sarees featured in Pyaar Ka Tohfa, saying they reflected the creativity and aesthetic sensibilities that South Indian filmmakers brought to Bollywood.
Released in 1984, Tohfa starred Jeetendra, Jaya Prada and Sridevi and went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. Pyaar Ka Tohfa, composed by Bappi Lahiri with lyrics by Indeevar and sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, emerged as one of the decade’s biggest musical hits. The film’s soundtrack also featured popular songs including Ek Aankh Maroon To and Gori Tere Ang Ang Mein.
