The unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) intensified on Tuesday after the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) alleged that Pakistani security forces opened fire and used tear gas against unarmed civilians in Bagh district.
The group also alleged that security personnel set fire to civilians’ motorcycles in the Makri area of Muzaffarabad district, adding that the incidents were part of escalating action against protesters across PoK.
According to JAAC, more than 50 people have reportedly been killed and hundreds injured during the ongoing unrest in the region over the past few days. The committee urged the United Nations, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), international media and human rights organisations to closely monitor the situation and seek an independent investigation into the alleged use of force.
Sharing videos on social media platform X, JAAC claimed that security forces used live ammunition and tear gas against protesters in Bagh. In another post, the group alleged that security personnel were involved in burning motorcycles belonging to civilians in Makri, Muzaffarabad.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into allegations of excessive use of force against protesters in PoK.
The international rights organisation said reports emerging from Rawalakot raised concerns over what it described as a continuing pattern of “unlawful violence” against protesters in the region. It also warned that the ongoing internet and mobile service blackout was making independent verification of the situation difficult.
Amnesty said restoring communication access would be important for ensuring transparency and accountability as authorities respond to the unrest.
