India secured a double podium finish in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra winning the silver medal and Yashvir Singh claiming bronze, while Sri Lanka’s R.T. Pathirage stunned the field with a Games record performance to take gold.
Pathirage produced a sensational throw of 89.75 metres to clinch the Commonwealth title, eclipsing the previous Games record and denying Chopra a second Commonwealth gold medal.
Neeraj, who won gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and missed the Birmingham 2022 edition due to injury, registered his season’s best effort of 85.83m in his second attempt. He opened with 80.97m and followed up with valid throws of 81.29m and 80.73m, while his final two attempts ended in fouls.
Yashvir Singh delivered the performance of his career, producing a personal best throw of 85.41m in the sixth and final round to leap into the bronze medal position. The effort earned him his maiden Commonwealth Games medal and completed a memorable outing for the Indian contingent.
Yashvir’s place on the podium remained under threat until the final throws, but Grenada’s former world champion Anderson Peters (83.88m) and South Africa’s Douw Smit (82.88m) were unable to improve their marks. Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott finished fifth with 82.55m.
Pakistan’s Paris Olympic champion and defending Commonwealth Games gold medallist Arshad Nadeem endured a disappointing competition, finishing ninth with a best throw of 77.41m. Nadeem had entered the event as the holder of the Games record of 90.13m, set at Birmingham in 2022.
India’s Rohit Yadav also featured in the final and finished seventh with a best throw of 81.56m.
The silver and bronze medals in javelin took India’s overall tally at the Glasgow Games to 23 medals — five gold, 12 silver and six bronze — with the contingent expected to add significantly to its count through the boxing finals.
