Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday appealed for compassion and guidance rather than punishment for a group of youngsters who allegedly used abusive language against him during a recent protest at Jantar Mantar, saying society should help “misguided” youth find the right path.
In a video message shared on his official Instagram account, the Prime Minister said he wanted to speak directly to young people in the wake of the incident, which had sparked widespread public discussion. He noted that abusive remarks were directed not only at him but also at his late mother, drawing strong reactions from many sections of society.
Acknowledging the public outrage, Modi said mistakes are often a part of childhood and youth, and that such phases also provide opportunities for learning and correction.
Describing the individuals involved as “misguided,” he said society’s responsibility was to counsel and support them rather than isolate or harass them through prolonged legal or social action. He said reform, not retribution, should be the objective.
The Prime Minister said he had chosen to forgive those responsible and expressed hope that society would also adopt a similar approach. He urged citizens to view the episode as an opportunity to guide young people instead of permanently condemning them.
Illustrating his point with an analogy, Modi said that when a person accidentally bites their tongue, they do not break their teeth because both are parts of the same body. Likewise, he said, young people are part of society and should be corrected with care rather than rejected.
He acknowledged that guiding those who have strayed from the right path is not an easy task but stressed that it remains a collective responsibility. The Prime Minister said constructive engagement with youth would be more effective than punitive measures in helping them become responsible citizens.
