Punjab Police has arrested four persons, including a juvenile, in connection with the attack on Police Post Chamiari under Ajnala Police Station in Amritsar district, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Friday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Karanbir Singh alias Gora, Manideep Singh, both residents of Harar Khurd village in Amritsar, Pardeep Singh alias Love of Gujjarpura, Amritsar, and a juvenile.
According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with an ISI-sponsored handler through social media and had received funds to carry out the attack.
He said further investigation is underway to trace both backward and forward linkages, identify other members of the network and uncover the funding channels behind the incident.
The attack took place on the intervening night of July 21 and 22, when unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly hurled an incendiary object at Police Post Chamiari.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural, Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said special teams were constituted immediately after the incident. Acting on human intelligence and technical inputs, police identified the suspects and subsequently arrested all four accused.
The SSP said the investigation revealed that Manideep Singh and Pardeep Singh allegedly conducted reconnaissance and planned the attack, while Karanbir Singh and the juvenile are accused of executing it. Efforts are underway to recover the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.
Chahal further said preliminary findings suggest that ISI handlers are attempting to recruit and radicalise unemployed youth in the 15-25 age group through social media to carry out anti-national activities in the border state.
A case has already been registered at Ajnala Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is in progress.
