Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with his United Kingdom counterpart, Andy Burnham, during which the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
Following the conversation, PM Modi said he congratulated Burnham on assuming office and wished him success in his new role. He said both leaders agreed to work closely in areas including technology, innovation, defence, security, clean energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of the recently operationalised India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), saying both countries would work together to maximise trade and investment opportunities for the mutual benefit of their people.
According to a statement issued by 10 Downing Street, Burnham underscored the strength of the UK-India relationship and its positive impact on communities across Britain. He outlined his vision to further deepen bilateral ties under the UK-India Vision 2035 framework and praised the contribution of the Indian diaspora to British society.
The statement said PM Modi referred to the historic links between Manchester and Ahmedabad, describing Ahmedabad as the “Manchester of India”.
The leaders also discussed the recently implemented Free Trade Agreement, with Burnham noting its potential to generate new economic opportunities in both countries.
They further reaffirmed their commitment to the UK-India Technology Security Initiative and identified emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as important areas for future collaboration.
The conversation also covered developments in the Middle East, with both leaders agreeing to continue working together to support de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The two Prime Ministers expressed their desire to remain in close contact and meet in person at the earliest opportunity.
